How you know it's the spring
- You heard a bang in the garage, and the door won't go up now.
- The opener strains, and the door rises a few inches, then stops.
- A gap in the coil of the spring above the door.
- The door goes up slowly and comes down hard.
Leave the door closed
The spring carries most of the door's weight. With it broken, whatever lifts the door next has to carry it all, and the opener isn't built for that. Don't try to raise it yourself. If it's stuck open, keep your hands off the release cord as well, because the door can drop. If a car is stuck inside, say so when you call.

Torsion or extension
A torsion spring is wound around a shaft over the door, and it tightens as the door comes down. Extension springs come in pairs, one beside each track, and stretch as the door closes. Each one needs a safety cable running through it, so a spring that breaks can't fly loose, and we check for it.
How a spring replacement goes
- We measure the old spring and check the door's weight, so the new spring is matched to it.
- You get the price in writing before any work. If the door has two springs, we tell you the other one is the same age, and you decide.
- We check the cables, drums and rollers while the tension is off, and stop and ask if any of them need work.
- We set the tension, balance the door and test the safety reverse.
- Whoever is home runs the door with every remote and the wall button before we go.
Why one spring job costs more than another
- One spring or two
- Torsion doors often have two. Extension springs always come as a pair, one on each side.
- The door's weight
- A heavier door needs a heavier spring. Wood and insulated doors weigh more than single-layer steel.
- The size of the spring
- The common sizes are on the truck. An odd one gets a price and a day before we order it.
- What else is worn
- Cables and rollers that have been working against a broken spring sometimes need replacing too. We show you and ask first.
After the spring is in
Every repair carries 1 year on parts and labor, and it's printed on your receipt. The old spring leaves with us. If something we fixed fails, call the same number and we come back.
Questions about springs
Can I open the door to get the car out?
Not with a broken spring. The door's full weight is on the opener and on your hands, and it can come down fast. Call, and tell us the car is stuck inside.
Why replace both springs if only one broke?
They went up together and have done the same work, so the other one is usually close behind. You can still replace only the broken one. You decide before any work starts.
